A Guide to Powerflushing

Firstly, let’s start with what a power flush is; a power flush is a cleansing process which aims to remove deposits of sludge, rust and any other debris from your central heating system. If left, these contaminants can seriously affect the efficiency of a heating system and in severe cases, a power flush is the only option available.

So how does a power flush work? Power flush equipment connects to your central heating and cleans the whole system without having to take off all the radiators. Power flush cleaner is added to the system water and starts to loosen the rust. The heating is turned on and radiator surfaces are checked for cold spots. Flushing water through individual radiators and vibrating cold spots allows the sludge to rapidly loosen. The sludge flows from the radiator and is collected. Radiators and pipe work are flushed until water samples are clean and pH neutral. Inhibitor fluid is added at the end of the process to help prevent future build-up of future contamination.

Signs that you might need a power flush:

  • Slow warming of the heating system

  • Cold spots or radiators that don’t fully heat up

  • Excessive noise from your boiler or the heating system pump

  • Certain radiators not working at all

  • Leaking or faulty radiators

  • Boiler cuts out regularly requiring reset

  • Sludge in feed and expansion tank

  • Discoloured water when you bleed the radiators

It is suggested that the power flush process is carried out if you plan on connecting a new boiler replacement to an old heating system. This is because most new boilers are condensing boilers and any contaminants already present in the heating system can rapidly damage the internal pipe work of the new boiler.

Power flushing is the fastest and most effective way to flush a heating system, the flushed system is achieved with minimal disruption and dismantling. If you fail to look after your central heating system by having a power flush regularly, there is an increased chance of your boiler, radiators and pipes breaking down. Power flushing can greatly extend the life of your system. If you think your heating system requires a power flush give Guildford Plumbing & heating Ltd  the boiler professionals, a call!
